Planetary Information

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the Solar System, after Mercury. Named after the Roman god of war, it is often described as the “Red Planet” because the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Mars is a terrestrial planet with a thin atmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of the impact craters of the Moon and the volcanoes, valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of Earth. The rotational period and seasonal cycles of Mars are likewise similar to those of Earth, as is the tilt that produces the seasons. Mars is the site of Olympus Mons, the second highest known mountain within the Solar System (the tallest on a planet), and of Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons. The smooth Borealis basin in the northern hemisphere covers 40% of the planet and may be a giant impact feature. Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, which are small and irregularly shaped. These may be captured asteroids, similar to 5261 Eureka, a Mars trojan.

Human Influence

There are several significant locations to mars that have occurred both before and after its terraforming. Two of the oldest are Black Mountain and the Mar’s Ring, known as the junk ring. Newer creations are Mar’s only city of New Earth and whats called the new west.

Black Mountain was the original colony habitat created by Cogs before the final earth war. It was filled by laborers who were used to cheaply mine and help terraform the rest of planet. The original structure was a clear dome, which overtime has darkened from various pollutants. It is still currently used by the majority of laborers, as well as criminal. In many ways it has become the ultimate slum of humanity.

The Junk Ring is much like any planetary ring, except it is made entirely of abandoned ships. These ships are the remnants of the final travelers to mars. These travelers were made up of the rich and influential, who instead of living within the black mountain chose to live in orbit until the planet was suitably terraformed. Afterwards most left these ships in orbit, which due to their age couldn’t survive reentry to the new atmosphere.

New Earth is mar’s only city which has expanded almost exponentially from black mountain. Currently its the size of Australia and at its center is home to the government, Omnitech, and Biocraft. The City is broken up into blocks which are independently run, but still part of the whole.

The New West is considered any land outside of New Earth on Mars. Many ranchers, miners, and bandits call it home. Though all Mars is considered under New Earth rule, few acknowledge it out in the new west.

  • Even during the early colonization days of mars, folklore about Martians has been talked about. Whether these stories are extensions from old earth, or more based in fact is unknown.
